President Viktor Yuschenko demands that gas talks with Russia be continued immediately. This follows from his letter to Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, which has been posted on the official website of the President.
"The current situation with gas supplies to Ukraine obliges me again to draw your attention to inadequate steps by the government aimed at implementation of the agreements reached between the presidents of Ukraine and Russia in Moscow on February 12," Yuschenko said.
The Ukrainian president notes that at present the Russian side has essentially restricted gas deliveries to Ukraine. "There are no agreements regarding the gas balance for 2008, or any contract framework. The level of gas settlements remains at the critical level. At the same time, OJSC Gazprom is not paying for transit of Russian gas to Europe," the statement reads.
"I demand that NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine be provided with the instructions reflecting the provisions approved by the president of Ukraine, taking into account the result of the latest negotiations," the letter reads.
As reported earlier, on March 3, Gazprom cut gas supplies to Ukraine by 25%.
On March 4, the Russian monopolist reduced gas supplies to this country by another 25%.
